What are the chances of my bicycle getting damaged via transportation on a plane?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

A friend & I are flying back from Frankfurt nxt week after a short cycling holiday & we’re wondering what the chances are of our bicycles getting damage when being handled & placed among other luggage on board the plane etc? Also, I know that you need to put your bicycle in a bag or narrow box, do the airline supply these or would I have to purchase them from somewhere? Cheers all:-)

Pack it properly, and put all the removable parts in your other luggage. If you can, pack bubblewrap and plenty of cardboard around forks, springs, gears and reas shock (assuming you have full suss, not a racer.)

Should be OK, but the other answers are correct, you will need a shipping box there… and back ! So find out if you can store it someplace for the flight home. Get extra insurance too.

Why doesn’t the US government declare an "oil import holiday" to alleviate the "oil problem"?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

FDR, Roosevelt, declared a "bank holiday" when the economic system became completly out of whack. Why not impose a similar "oil import holiday" to stop the oil madness cycle??

Roosevelt declaired a "bank hoilday" to stop the run on the banks. People had paniced and all wanted to withdraw their money. Banks keep money on hand for withdrawals, but most of the money deposited in banks is then loaned to others. That is why banks can pay interest on deposits. When everyone wanted to withdraw money at the same time, there was a real possibility that the banks would fail, and many depositors could lose everything.
The situation with oil is different. The problem is that there is too little oil on the market to allow us to buy all we want at prices we feel willing to pay. That makes prices go up, making oil, and oil products too expensive for some people, thus lowering demand. If we had an "oil holiday" and imported less oil, the problem would just get worse. Prices would go higher, and fewer people would be able to afford it. The solution to the oil–the energy problem–new technology that will develop other sources of energy. Some people want prices for oil to continue to go higher. They think this will make other forms of energy "affordable"–that is, no more expensive than expensive oil. Developments in technology will eventually make it possible for us to have other sources of energy. The real question is whether or not we should use the oil resources in this country–thus lowering prices and reducing our dependance on foreign oil. Some people think we should keep oil prices high thus forcing us to adjust to higher prices which wil make other energy sources "affordable". This will be hard on people who already have trouble paying their bills. Other people think we should use the oil resources we have–thereby lowering prices in the near future–while we work to develop other forms of energy that can be produced at lower prices. The people who want to keep prices high seem to think we will not develop other forms of energy unless we are forced to do so. It makes one wonder who forced the Wright brothers to figure out how to make a plane that would fly, who forced Edison to learn how to make electricity useable as an energy source, and who forced Bill Gates to found Microsoft. There is a mountain of money to be make by anyone who can come up with a workable, affordable energy source. Probably that is incentive enough to get people to work on the problem.

Where can I find help on wiring holiday lights on my 17ft sailboat?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

I currently use a 370 amp deep-cycle battery to run an electric trolling motor for docking. I’d like to run holiday lights up the stays of the mast. Can I use the same battery? How would I go about the wiring from scratch. Any suggestions are where to start?
Thanks and have a great Holiday Season.

+ Try an RV supply place, preferably the manufacturer and see if you can order 12 volt DC from them. It is better than trying to run an inverter plus you might be able to recharge your battery from your boat’s engine. This will be a bit pricey no matter how you do it. I think it would look very holiday like so if you can afford it have some fun. You might want to rig your lights under a bridge abutment were you might be able to reach the yard arms.
Good Luck

Cycling/ Scenic holiday in England?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

What shall I do for my sister’ birthday which is coming up next week? I want to take her away on a small break in England. Anyone recommend a place in England with beautiful scenary/ gorgeous grounds? Myabe even somewhere we could cycle? Cheers :D .

How about:

www.saddleskedadle.co.uk

I think thats how you spell it.

Anyway, they do UK cycling holidays that use hostels or b and s etc. Worth a look.

Other than that, try booking a cottage etc in Devon/Cornwall. Good riding area, especially the Moors. The Lake district is also very good for riding holidays, as are the Cotswolds. North Yorkshire is also very nice.

The thing to remember is the anount of stuff you are going to take with you. If you go with a package deal, they carry the stuff from point to point, although I understand that a sherpa service is available at some of the more common cycling destinations.

Note: If doing yourself, buy an ordinance survey map of the area and plan your route before you go.

Luck

Irish Cycling Holidays

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

The Irish media reports that the Irish tourist board is is to launch a new €30m strategy aimed at reversing the massive drop in the number of tourists visiting Ireland for cycling holidays.

Since the year 2000, the number of bike tourists visiting Ireland for cycling holidays has fallen from 130,000 to 50,000.

That’s a crying shame: Ireland is a brilliant place to ride bikes. Here’s the Quickrelease.tv kids on an Irish cycling holiday in 2005.
