Good hiking trips in the Northeast USA?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I’m looking for a really fun hiking trip, about a week long, not requiring us to carry heavy packs on the trail. Anyone know of any? Or, what you think is a great area to hike in?

Cameron County Pennsylvania.

I am looking for a two week overnight hiking trip within the United States or Canada, where should I go?

I am an experienced hiker that is looking for a beautiful two week hiking trip. I would prefer trails with little to no facilities as I have my own equipment to sustain me for two weeks.

It will be hard to beat the Appalachian Trail. Join http://whiteblaze.net/ and look around. Careful, the AT is HIGHLY addictive!

What do I need to bring for a day and a half-2 day hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Last time, we planned a 10 day hiking trip, but we cut it short because we were way over our heads. I probably packed a 50-60 lb pack and this way too strenuous.

What about a 1.5-2 day hiking trip? How much weight in the pack would be sufficient?

What do I need to bring for a day and a half-2 day hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail?

25lbs and you’ll be living "high on the hog", if you do it right.
Pack List:
Soda Can Alcohol Stove
Wind Screen
Denatured Alcohol
Z Rest
Fleece Sleeping Bag Liner
40 Degree Bag
1qt Pot
Spoon
Pocket Knife
Med Kit (Duct Tape)
Lighter
Water Bottle
Tarp Tent (pegs)
Toothbrush/Baking Soda
Head Lamp
Rain Jacket
Winter Cap
Fleece Jacket
Under layers
1 xtra pair of socks

Food:
4 Snickers
4 packs hot chocolate
1 small summer sausage
8 packs of Rameen
4 packs of cheese grits

Quick list off the top of my head, but its the basics and I’d hike out with this list of gear.

I thru hiked in 05′ GA-ME. So I know enough to know that this is a hard question to answer (hike your own hike). For example my dry weight (everything but food and water) during the summer is about 10lbs..However when I’m not hiking big miles (20+) I load up on the goodies. Snacks, inflatable mattress, loads of food, tent.

Your load determination really should be based on mileage and what your comfortable with. Two 40 mile days means you need to go extremely light. However Two 5 mile days means you could pack as much as you can carry. Terrain excluding S. Maine & NH is pretty easy so its not really an issue.

From the information you have given I bet you could drop a lot of weight just by ditching a lot of the stuff you don’t really need or upgrading from anything you bought from an Army/Navy store. You have to decide what those things are.

Hiking trip – part 2

http://www.survivalistboards.com

This video was filmed in May 2007.

Two of my sons and a buddy of mine go on a 6+ mile hiking trip. We spent the night next to a year round natural creek. Trips like this can really test your endurance and is a good training experience.

Camping trips can also help test your gear and your survival skills in a controlled environment.

The rifle is a WASR-10 AK47. It was brought in case we saw any wild hogs. The plans were, if we saw any hogs to shoot one and cook it over a camp fire.

Be sure to drop by the website sometime, its the best survival forum on the internet.

What is some good food to take on a hiking trip?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

I am going on a hiking trip on the Pacific Crest Trail and I am not sure what kind of food to take. I don’t have a bear proof can or bear proof bags. I am looking for food that bears will not be able to smell. I am not sure if bears can smell canned food like Chili or Chicken Noodle Soup. If you know what kind of food fits what I am asking please answer. Thanks.

Don’t risk it! My advice to you is to buy bear proof bags, your life is worth that investment. When you are on your trip make sure to hang the bags of food on a tree branch a good 5-10 yards away from where you are sleeping so, for one the mice and other small rodents can’t get into it and also if the bears happen to come by they won’t have a reason to be poking around where you are sleeping.

Freeze-dried foods. If you go to a local outdoor/backpacking kind of store (Outdoor Gear Exchange,or Eastern Mountain Sports) the usually have racks of freeze-dried camping foods where you just add hot water and viola! you have chili or some other kind of soup, etc.

Instant stuff:
Instant oatmeal, instant coffee, instant hot chocolate, cup-a-soup, all of this things are real light (just little packets) and really quick and easy to make in the morning or when your really hungry and want food quick.

Energy bars:
Power bars, Cliff bars and any other bar that is in that aisle at the grocery store is great as a quick energy booster on a long hike, or a snack before you reach camp.

Drink Powder;
there are so many different kinds it doesn’t matter what you get, just get something along the lines of gatorade powder, that you can pour in your water bottle on those days when its really hot, your breaking out a sweat and you really need to replenish all of those lost sodium, sugar…etc.

What are the best ingredients in a trail mix for a hiking trip?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Just looking for some ideas of what to mix up in a trail mix that will keep me energized for a hiking trip.

almonds, honey roasted peanuts, m&m’s, pretzels, dried fruit (bananas, pineapple, raisins).

The nuts and chocolate are a great burst of energy. I also bring along a granola bar or two for fast munching during short breaks.
