Walking Holiday – Cyprus?

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I’m thinking about going on a walking holiday in Cyprus next year, possibly using Paphos as a base as it looks fairly close to the Troodos Mountains and the Akamas peninsula. Can anyone recommend any good walks nearby or suggest a particular area that I should see?

Check out;

www.sherpa-walking-holidays.co.uk, and look for Cyprus.

It is extremely safe here in Cyprus, and you have picked just the right areas to explore.. Yes, Paphos is probably the best place for you to base yourself, which is within easy reach of the Troodos, and the Akamas Peninsula.

i’m going on a walking holiday to scotland this summer and am unsure what to wear, any ideas ?

California Question: What’s in walking distance from the Holiday Inn Airport Long Beach, CA?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

I will be there for a week starting Saturday. What stores/restaurants/bars/gas stations are in walking distance from my hotel? Please help! I will be without a car and need to get food/etc.
The address is 2640 North Lakewood Blvd, LBC.
Thanks!

As the others have said there really isn’t much around your hotel. But the Long Beach Transit system of buses, shuttles and boats is very convenient and easy to use, and master. Most major tourist attractions, shopping and dining options are within 15 minutes of your hotel.

Basic bus fare is $1.10 and the passport shuttle is Free within Downtown Long Beach.

From the corner of Lakewood Blvd and Willow Street, you can catch the 111 or 122 Long Beach Transit(LBT) bus Eastbound, to the corner of Lakewood Blvd and Hardwick Streets. (3 miles from your hotel) This is where you will find the Lakewood Mall. In addition to shopping, there are many dining options within the mall, and just across from the mall, on Candlewood Street is the Candlewood Restaurant Row. Also across Lakewood Blvd in the Candlewood Square shopping center you will find a Vons supermarket.

If you head to Lakewood Mall, be sure to stop at the Concierge Desk and pick up a free copy of the "Discovery Map of Greater Long Beach".More than a street map, it will show you fully illustrated maps of all the local attractions and how to get around on public transport. You can also view the map itself online here-
http://www.discoverymap.com/California/Long-Beach-California-Interactive-Map.html
In fact… If you use the "zoom" and arrows functions, you can even see your hotel on the map (it’s the round tower), across from Long Beach Airport, right by the corner of Lakewood and Willow.

Also from Lakewood and Willow, you can catch LBT 112, 111, 102, or 131, and connect to LBT 172, 91, or 92 to get to the Los Altos shopping center. At the Los Altos shopping Center, you will find a gourmet market (Bristol Farms) and many cafes surrounding it, as well as a Borders Book store and a couple pharmacies and fast food outlets.

Also, the Los Altos shopping center is the stop for Long Beach Transit "Passport D". The Passport charges a fare ($1.10) from Los Altos to Downtown (Actually anywhere east of Alamitos Ave you must pay the fare). But once you are in the downtown Long Beach area, the Passport shuttle service is free and extremely popular with locals and tourists alike. There’s also the AquaBus water taxi, with fare at just $1. There is catamaran service (Aqualink) at $5 to Alamitos Bay, the Queen Mary and the Aquarium, but I’ve never used it.

Downtown Long Beach is home to the Aquarium of The Pacific, Pine Ave, and my personal favourite, Shoreline Village. The area is also very safe at most any hour.

I’ve included links to most of the popular areas as well as to the Long Beach Transit (which features a trip planner including a fare calculator.)

what can i do within walking distance from the holiday inn in crystal city in arlington, VA?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Just going for a day trip I was interested in doing something on the "cheap" side but important like the Lincoln memorial or visiting the pentagon> Also if u could mention how to get to those places from that hotel. Thanks in advance!!!!

Directly beneath Crystal City is a Metro subway station. Get on, and take the Metro (which is fast and safe) into Washington, DC, getting off at the Smithsonian station. In each direction will be numerous places to visit, including the Smithsonian museums and many of the monuments, including the Washington Monument and (a bit further away) the Lincoln Memorial.

While Crystal City is full of nice hotels, shopping, and restaurants, there aren’t any major attractions in easy walking distance. I believe that the Pentagon no longer offers public tours.

where to go for a holiday in cornwall camping walking distance to beach village pubs and restaurants?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

and fishing, iv looked on web sites and theres so many villages its hard to choose.

If you want to go camping, it is unlikely there will be too much choice for pubs and restaurants within walking distance. Towns with facilities like that don’t usually have camping sites so near a populated area. If you are looking at villages there won’t be much choice of what you want.
You could try Looe. Padstow is nice, but expensive, and I don’t know of any camping sites within walking distance. Polzeath any good? Or Bude? Newquay may have what you want, but locals find it a bit tacky.
Most camping sites have their own club with meals and bars. Pentewan, near St Austell, is in a village with a pub, and there was another restaurant the last time I went there. You could go by bus into Mevagissey for fishing.
Try websites for John Fowler Holidays and Park Dean Holidays. Both have several sites.
If you would consider North Devon, there is Braddicks Holiday Camp at Westward Ho! That village has accessible eateries etc, and you can go by bus to Bideford for fishing by boat, or sea-fish in the village.

Scenic, warm, walking, reasonably priced holiday destination?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

We are looking to go on holiday in late July, and are trying to get some inspiration for destinations.
We enjoy walking, warm weather, and nice scenery. Budget would be approx £400 p.p. for a week including flights from the UK.
Any suggestions please? Thanks!

After travelling extensively for my work I would say neither of the suggestions made so far offer exactly what you are asking.

I assume you are not really wanting to full tourist hot spot and instead taking in areas slightly off the ‘beaten track’.

A couple of suggestions taking in all of your criteria:

1) Malta/Madeira

Both of these islands are very similar, however Madeira is probably more suitable for someone 50+. Both islands are beautiful and have so much to see. Here you can take in many of the coastal walks, unspoilt beaches, many churches, museums and castles as well as experiencing much of the traditional cultures. In July both islands will be very warm.

2) La Rochelle – France.

This is a gorgeous, unspoilt and magical! Thankfully many British tourists have not yet stumbled across this wonderful area of France and so you really do experience TRUE French culture. This area is very proud of its history and pushes it from all corners. It is an area of France, which still holds DAILY farmers markets, which must not be missed.

Whilst here you should take in many of the coast paths as well as the many Fortified towns. Here you can walk around the ‘abandoned forts’ and take in the flora and fauna, which has made them its home!

3) Frankfurt – Germany

Frankfurt is a very beautiful, busy and exciting city.

You have many galleries, walks and river views to take in, all of which still boast much of its historical beauty. However Frankfurt is also proud of its sky line and is proud to show off its many sky scrapers, some of which are award winners and world renowned.

FINAL TIP!

Use budget airlines such as Ryan Air, BMI Baby and Flybe as these fly in to the ‘out of town’ airports making it a much cheaper flight AND saves you more money to spend else where.

Enjoy!!

Any tips for avoiding blisters on a walking holiday?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Get the best walking or trekking shoes you can afford, have them help you fit them in the shop as they know what to look for.
Also at the same time get good socks that breathe, there are enough good brands out there.
If all else fails take Compeed blister plasters.

I went on a 10 day trek in Nepal (Himalayas) and had never trekked before, I had no problems even after walking 30 miles a day!!

Good luck and try and enjoy the scenery as much as you can
